Avatars are the heart of being a Summoner, they are powerful pets that you can summon and control you aid you in battle.

A Summoner receives eight avatars:

Carbuncle
Light

Garuda
Wind - Rabao

Titan
Earth - Bastok

Shiva
Ice - San d'Oira

Ramuh
Thuunder - Mhaura

Ifrit
Fire - Kazham

Leviathan
Water - Norg

Fenrir
Dark - Windurst

Obtaining Avatars

All avatars except Carbuncle and Fenrir can be acquired using either of two methods; level twenty solo battles or level sixty-five plus advance party battles (Protocrystal Battle). For simplicity, the easy method for the lower levels will be discussed, but if you are of level sixty-five or higher you may want to acquire your avatars by the more advance high-level method (Protocrystal Battle).

Carbuncle and Fenrir

Carbuncle is the first avatar you will receive and Fenrir will most likely be the last one, this is because of how the avatar quests are set up.

Carbuncle

Your first avatar will be Carbuncle, and you will receive this avatar by completing the Ruby Quest that opens the Summoner advance job, available from the main menu.

Fenrir

Your last avatar will most likely be Fenrir, and you will receive this avatar by collecting all the elemental 'whispers' key items from each of the advance high-level Protocrystal battles; Garuda, Shiva, Ifrit, Ramuh, Titan and Leviathan. I say most likely, as you can actually defeat prime avatars and just keep the whispers instead of getting the avatar pact, and go straight on to defeat Fenrir. This is of course unlikely, but very much possible.

Do not return to the prime avatar reward giving NPCs if you wish to keep the whispers for Fenrir.

You will need to be of high-level for this avatar and cannot aquire this avatar or 'whispers' from the level twenty solo battles.

Bring the 'whispers' (key items) to Leepe-Hoppe and he will give you a 'Moon Bauble' (key item). This will allow you to go into Full Moon Fountain and battle with Fenrir Prime, if you win the battle you will obtain the Fenrir avatar.

Fame (perquisite requirements for avatar quests)

The following information is in regard of the remaining six avatars, Garuda, Shiva, Ifrit, Ramuh, Titan and Leviathan. At the stage you will already have your Carbuncle and are wishing to obtain additional avatars.

The first thing you require to start the quest to get additional avatars is 'fame', and yes it is a downtime, but your fame will be required for higher battles in the upper end of the game anyhow.

The high-level Protocrystal battles require level 7-8 fame, but the level twenty solo battles only require level 2-3 fame. The fame level is not precise, because it varies slightly from person to person, based on unidentified factors. So how do you raise your fame levels? Questing!

Fame Levels

There are nine levels of fame for each city, if you speak to the correct NPC for checking fame, the NPC will tell you how famous you are in that particular city. Some cities share fame and some cities fame is a measure of multiple fame of other cities.

*Note* You can check fame for Norg (Tensyodo fame) by the cost of 'Rice Balls' at Neptune's Spire Inn in lower Jeuno (J-7), 153 - 157 gil per 'Rice Ball' is about level seven fame.

NPCs for checking your fame levels:

When you speak to the NPC you will be given a sentence based on your fame, each city has a slightly different script, but the following scripts will give you a guide:

Increasing Fame

Each city has many quests, quests raise fame and are different from missions. You can do many quests and earn good rewards, which is advicable in all the cities, but there are faster ways to raise fame. Most quests you can only do once, but some of the quests you can repeat and still earn fame.

How many quests you will need to complete to raise fame:

For a complete quest listing use Allakhazam for the best information, click here. Then select which fame you want to work on.

Repeat quests to raise fame quickly:

San d'Oria Fame
1: Trade 2 bat wings to Secodia in North San d'Oria (F-6), 200gil.
2: Trade 4 flints to Legata in South San d'Oria (K-6), 100gil.

*Top Tip for repeat quests that require zoning*

Use a Black Mage with Warp capabilities, set your home point to the same zone of the repeat quest NPC, and simply do the quest, warp and repeat.

Initiating Avatar Quests

You can start all or one of the avatar quests as soon as your fame is high enough, just go to the start NPC as shown in the table above and go through the script until you get a 'Mini Fork', you will not be ported to battle yet so do not worry, you will be given an option box before the port anyway, incase you change your mind. Incidentally the solo level twenty Protocrystal Battle start NPC, is next to the advance high-level Protocrystal Battle start NPC on all the avatars.

*Top Tip for mini forks *

Mini Forks are excellent because they double as a transport tool, but can only be used if your main job is a Summoner. Say you want to do your AF battle in Fei'Yin, but don't want to run all the way over there, use your mini fork to warp to Fei'Yin as if your going to do a mini avatar battle, but when you get to the Protocrystal trade the AF battle fork instead (when the rest of the party has caught up of course). Occassionally mini forks will not work, this is thought to, because you having a 'Whisper' in your 'Key Items'.

Preparing for Battle

Once you have your 'Mini Fork' you need to prepare for battle, you will need your equipment, food, drink, potion, buffs, sub-job, elemental day, macros, and tactics.

Equipment

When you enter the battlefield your level will be reduced to level 20, if your are higher than level 20 to start with, this means any equipment with a level requirement higher than 20 will be removed. Now many people will tell you the level 20 equipment is not worth equipping for these fights as you do not need a high mana pool and you should not be getting hit. I personally feel vulnerable going bare butt into these fights, so get yourself a set of level 20 equipment with good Defense, HP and resists. Mana pool is unless for this as the 2 hour will use up all your pool anyway.

* Top Tip* Get a Hermits Wand, they are only cheap from the auction house and give you 25% spell casting interuption. This will assist when the avatar is beating on you and your trying to cast Carbuncle.

Food (Boiled Crab)

Do not use any mana foods, as explained in the food your mana pool is irrelevant after the 2 hour is used. Use a food that will add to keeping you alive should you need to take a few hits, I use 'Boiled Crab' which increases your base defense by 22% and adds 4 Vitality. You need one Boiled Crab per battle.

Drink (Yagudo Drink)

Your drink is extremely important, because it adds a refresh effect. Yagudo Drinks regenerates 2 MP every 3 seconds for 180 seconds, this will prevent your Carbuncle from poofing after the 2 hour ability is used, allowing you to cast up to three 'Searing Lights', because the 'Astral Flow 2 hour' lasts for three minutes. If this sounds completed to you, just know that without a refresh drink you can only use the 'Searing Light' ability once after activating your 'Astral Flow 2 hour', but with refresh you can use up to three 'Searing Light' abilities after activating the 'Astral Flow 2 hour'. You will need one Yagudo Drink per battle.

Potion (Ether X 2, Hi-Potion X 5)

Potions are required to give you instant mana to enable you to use the 'Searing Light' ability quickly. After the first 'Searing Light' ability is used your MP will drop to 1 and slowly regain because of the refresh effect, but that is not fast enough as 'Searing Light' requires at least 44 MP or it will fail. The instant mana gives you enough mana to recast additional 'Searing Lights', as after each one your mana pool will be reduced to 1. The Hi-Poions cast about the same time as Ethers do, and are great lifesavers, you will not use five, but always take five just incase, each potion will restore about 50% of your HP. You will need two Ether and five Hi-Potions per battle.

Buffs

You can pre buff before entering the battle zone

Sub-Job

The best job to sub is one you feel comfortable with, I use a White Mage so I can buff and cure, but some like to sub a higher defense job.

Elemental Day

As with the advance high-level Protocrystal Battle, each avatar is weaker on certain days, a diagram of this is shown on the Elemental section of this website. Due to the fact that Carbuncle is a light elemental avatar, Lights day is also excellent for any of the avatar battles, as Carbuncle will do more damage on this day.

Order of Days

Firesday > Earthsday > Watersday > Windsday > Iceday > Lightningday > Lightsday > Darksday > Firesday

You can kill them on any day, all days use the same method, I just feel better killing them on the correct days because I am superstitious ^^.

Macros

Macros are very important during these battles as timing is vital, you will not have time to scroll through menus and open inventory to scroll for food, drink or potions, but the macros need to be set up correctly or everything will fail.

Get a fresh rack of macros that have not yet been used, Macro Set 10 for example; keep this set of Macros specifically for your level 20 avatar battles.

Now make the following Macros, ensuring that all the grammar and case is correct:

Self healing

Ctrl 1
Cure
/ma "Cure" <me>

Instant HP potion

Ctrl 2
Hi-Potion
/item "Hi-Potion" <me>

Instant mana potion

Ctrl 3
Ether
/item "Ether" <me>

Mana refresh drink

Ctrl 4
Refresh
/item "Yagudo Drink" <me>

Summon Carbuncle

Alt 1
Carbuncle
/ma "Carbuncle" <me>

Command Carbuncle to attack the targeted avatar

Alt 2
Assault
/pet "Assault" <t>

Command carbuncle to nuke the avatar (providing AF is used and you have 44 MP)

Alt 3
SL
/pet "Searing Light" <t>

Use two hour Summoner ability to allow 'Searing Light' to be available

Alt 4
AF
/ja "Astral Flow" <me>

In the tactics section below I will refer to these macros and explain why and when they are used. On the 'Searing Light macro <bt> (battle target) can be used instead of <t>, which will tell the Carbuncle to do the 'Searing Light' ability on the monster in combat with a red name, this will lessen the mistake of the ability 'missing' due to the monster not being targeted.

Tactics

These tactics are 99% chance of winning, the only time they will fail is if you mess up the timing of the Macros buttons, or your position. Use the Hi-Potion as and when you need.

OK, so lets start!

  1. Put your level 20 equipment on.
  2. Make sure your jobs are correct; Summoner / White Mage, or what ever you have decided, the quest will not work unless your main is a Summoner though.
  3. Make sure you have 1 Boiled Crab, 1 Yagudo Drink and 2 Ethers.
  4. Get any high level buffs you can, Protect IV and Shell III if possible.
  5. Go to the start NPC.
  6. Trade the appropriate 'Mini Fork' to the NPC, go through the script and select 'Lets Go!' at the teleport options box.
  7. You will now be stood in front of the Protocrystal (Do not touch it!)
  8. Self Protect, Shell, Aquaveil, Bar -element-, Blink, Stoneskin etc
  9. Eat the 'Boiled Crab' food.
  10. Trade the appropriate 'Mini Fork' to the Protocrystal and watch the cut scene.

*Note* The advance high-level Protocrystal Battle gives a 'key item' 'Tuning fork', whereas the solo level twenty Protocrystal Battle gives an actual 'Mini Fork' in your inventory. This is an important note to make, because the Protocrystal for both fights is the same, and if you activate the Protocrystal with the 'key item' 'Tuning Fork' instead of trading the 'Mini Fork' you will find yourself in a high level battle.

Time for Battle!

The battlefield is sectioned into three areas; see the diagram below. You will zone in at the bottom section labeled 'Zone', the avatar will wait for you at the top section labeled 'Pit'.

For the battle each of the three-circled areas will be utilized and I will refer to the labeled areas. The Cure Macro is not included in this tactic because you should not need it, use it if you have to but do not use up your 'Searing Light' mana.

Each battle will cost around 6000gil on food, drink, and potions if buying from the Auction House.

You can do a battle every two hours, because you need your two hour ability, but you can only repeat each avatar every twenty-four hours, same as the advance high-level battles (see exception below). That means you can try upto six avatars each real life day with a space of two hours inbetween each one.

*Exception to the 24 hour rule*

The server resets the avatar timers at 12am Japan time, this means you could fight an avatar before 12am Japan, and then fight the same avatar after 12 am Japan (given you allow your 2 hour ability to become available as that does not reset).

  1. Enter at the 'Zone'. You will now be in the battlefield and level 20.
  2. Run to the 'Bend' and press Macro Alt 1 (Carbuncle) and Ctrl 4 (Refresh).
    • You now have the Carbuncle out and the refresh mana tic.
  3. Run to the 'Pit' just out of the avatar aggro range.
  4. Press Macro Alt 2 (Assault) and wait for the Carbuncle to engage.
    • The Carbuncle is now attacking the avatar.
  5. Run up to the avatar and press Macro Alt 4 (AF) then Macro Alt 3 (SL).
    • Carbuncle has just nuked the avatar with 'Searing Light' to about 60-65%.
    • Your Carbuncle is at about 50% health.
  6. Run past 'Bend' and down towards to 'Zone', watching the 'Carbuncle' bar at all times, keep running until it no longer says 'Carbuncle' and immediately press Macro Alt 1 (Carbuncle).
    • You now have about 20 MP.
  7. The Carbuncle will engage the avatar as it comes down the hill, meanwhile press Alt 8 (Ether).
    • You now have about 46 MP.
  8. Press Macro Alt 3 (SL) making sure you have over 44 mana.
    • Carbuncle has just nuked the avatar to about 30-35%.
    • Your Carbuncle is at about 50% health.
  9. Run towards the 'Pit', watching the 'Carbuncle' bar at all times, keep running until it no longer says 'Carbuncle' and immediately press Macro Alt 1 (Carbuncle).
    • You now have about 20 MP.
  10. The Carbuncle will engage the avatar as it comes up the hill, meanwhile press Alt 8 (Ether).
    • You now have about 46 MP.
  11. Press Macro Alt 3 (SL) making sure you have over 44 mana.
    • The avatar will now die or be at 1% or 2% for the Carbuncle to finish off.

*Note* Alternativly instead of steps 2, 3, and 4, you can:

*Note* You must be stood near the avatar when you do the 'Searing Light' otherwise when you use the ability the avatar will move out of range when the aggro is transferred over to you and the 'Searing Light' will fail.

*Note* If you win you will also be awarded a warp scroll so you can get home safely.

*Note* You can repeat the avatar battles even if you have already won the avatar, although the only reward you will recieve is a warp scroll =).

Congratulations! New avatars!

Avatar Power

Now you have avatars, you have to know what to do with them. After the 14-09-04 avatars now get TP (technical points) and can be used in skill chains and magic bursts. So having equipment that will lower your blood pact ability delay and perpetuation cost is essential.
